Firefox 8 For Android is out now

Mozilla has updated 'Firefox for Android' to version 8. The new features include:

• Master Password: Add a master password to encrypt saved usernames and passwords.
• Bookmarks on Home Screen: Bookmark any website, add it to the home screen
• Uses same browser engine that is used by Firefox desktop browser
• IPv6 on Android

Over to known issues now:

• The Swiftkey X input method can cause some character duplication issues when using "backspace" (see bug 672661)
• blinking characters in form fields (see bug 665374)
• Unable to zoom in/out a webpage on header/footer when a double tap gesture is made (see bug 639504)
• Sync Now button is active even if the Sync is in progress (see bug 656594)
• We found an extremely rare case where the browser may become unable to load web pages or close tabs. This should not happen in normal operation (see bug 676780), but we are working on a solution. Clearing the browser profile (Settings -> Applications -> Clear Data) resolves it, but may remove useful browser data like bookmarks and web history. Recommendation: use Firefox Sync for a seamless web experience across all your devices that run Firefox
• For some users HTML5 video may load slowly and display rendering artifacts on the screen during playback (see bug 622839)
• Reloading a page increases the zoom level (see bug 628269)
• Users who have a large desktop profile using Firefox Sync may see some performance issues during the initial sync process
• Adobe Flash and other plugins are not supported. Currently, enabling the Flash plugin results in a compromised user experience across Firefox for mobile

Amazon Appstore updated to 2.0

Amazon has updated "Appstore for Android" to version 2.0, adding wide range of features to be in line with their upcoming superhot tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire.

The UI theme is changed to be similar to Kindle Fire's UI, with Grey background a bit of Orange here and there. In-app purchases is another feature that is added and there is proper Parental Control setup to keep your kid away from toying with app purchases etc. This is how the new appstore will look like:

iOS updated to 5.0.1 to fix battery issues

Apple has released version 5.0.1 of iOS to public. The main reason for this quick update is to fix battery issues that were plaguing iOS devices that were upgraded ver 5.0. This update also adds multitouch gesture support for older iPad, betters voice recognitionfor Australian users and also fixes the loophole where the 'smart cover' can be used to unlock the device without entering passcode. This udpate is available for iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, iPads and iPod touch G3 and G4.

Update: Some have reported that their iOS devices continue having battery issues even after installing 5.0.1 while some users reported issues like

• contact name not displayed properly when the phone receives incoming call
• Microphone issues
• Wi-Fi signal issues
• Issue connecting to cell phone network

These issues are not wide spread nor are they consitent.

Twitter native photo service takes the top spot

Twitter's official photo sharing service is now the most used service for sharing photos on Twitter, at 36% marketshare. The surprising fact is that it took just three months to overtake popular sharing services like twitpic, yfrog etc. Twitpic's share fell from 45% to 30% in just two months time.  Yfrog is now at 21.1% marketshare while Instagram has 12% marketshare. Microsoft allowing high profile apps use native ARM code?

Rafael Rivera has has reported that the brand new apps Spotify and Tango are using native ARM code over Silverlight and XNA. Last year, it was announced that Microsoft will allow 'select' developers to use native ARM code and seems that the restrictions are lifted for some developers. This is definitely a good news as it can further increase performance of the application and we wish that MS soon allows everyone to use native code.

Apple and Dell goes greener, according to Greenpeace report

According to the latest Greenpeace report card,Apple has moved up five spots to fourth place among peers. HP has taken the top position from Nokia (which Nokia held for many years) and is almost into the green zone while RIM is ranked last. Dell and Nokia occupied second and third places.

R.I.P Gmail App for Blackberry

Google has announced that support and development for 'Gmail app for Blackberry' will end on 22nd of November. Come 22nd, the application will no longer be available for download and Google will not entertain any support related requests.
